The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness (The Alliance) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing programs and activities aimed at outreach, education, early intervention, and advocacy for all eating disorders. Founded in October 2000, The Alliance has worked tirelessly to raise awareness; eliminate secrecy and stigma; promote access to care; and support those susceptible to, currently struggling with, and recovered from eating disorders. We create a bridge for those needing and seeking help by connecting people with resources to assist them in recovery. The Alliance offers comprehensive services, including: educational presentations to schools, healthcare providers, hospitals, treatment centers, and community agencies; free, clinician-led weekly support groups for those struggling and for their loved ones; support and referrals through both our free help-line and comprehensive referral website, www.findEDhelp.com; and advocacy for eating disorders and mental health legislation. In August 2017, The Alliance opened Psychological Services, which offers direct, low-cost, life-saving treatment to underinsured and uninsured adults in our community.
Although eating disorders affect such a vast number of people, the associated stigma causes most to feel isolated and alone in their illness. Our organization understands the significance that a community can offer individuals, providing them with a safe space where they can begin to heal therapeutically. As the only national organization in the country to provide free, clinician-led support groups, these communities not only aid in decreasing isolation, but provide individuals with a sense of belonging. They offer an environment of acceptance that serves as a refuge for those who may feel misunderstood and also creates a community of care. All support groups are free of charge. Please go to www.allianceforeatingdisorders.com to find local support groups that we currently offer.
We created www.findEDhelp.com, our national gender inclusive and interactive treatment database to help you find the right treatment fast. Our database includes eating disorder treatment options for all levels of care. You can search based on specific criteria including zip code, populations treated, accepted insurance plans, treatment modalities, and levels of care offered. Further customization is even available to include what comorbid diagnoses can be treated; number of patients in programming; nutritional philosophies; and number of individual sessions offered each week.
